Just throw it away!

"Just throw it away" said my husband as I showed him the old hairbrush I found. It had been missing for a couple days now, so yesterday at Walmart I picked up a brand new one. Well, as things like this go, as soon as I spent the money on the new one, I found my old one. "I don't want to throw it away, I've had it for so long" I told my husband.
On closer examination (done by putting the old one next to the brand new brush), I realized that in fact I probably should throw away the old brush. Its broken on the bottom, has tons of prongs missing, and has ALOT of my long hair forever wrapped up in the bristles. So why isn't it in the trash yet?!
This little exchange between my husband and I got me thinking. I have a brand new brush, it looks nice, works better, and I did spend money on it, so why shouldn't I throw out the old one? The only reason I had was that I was attached to it. I don't normally like change, and even something as little as a throwing out a hairbrush would be hard for me.
I quickly noticed the similarity between this situation and the decisions we must make when we come to Christ. After we are saved, bought for the price of Christs blood, we must let go of our old self, the one that we are used to, and we must embrace our new life. God calls for us to totally change our actions, thoughts, and attitudes. This isn't always easy, especially when we are so accustomed to the way we live and as humans, we generally do not like change.

Once we listen to the voice of the Lord, throw away our old self, and start living with the brand new chance that God gives us, it is refreshing and just feels "right". Change isn't always bad, it just takes some getting used to sometimes. Before I know it, I won't even miss the old brush because the new one is so much cleaner, nicer, and all around better :)

<why hold onto the old things when Christ has given us something so new, fresh, clean, and awesome!?!

  1. What a great post and a great example. Looks like God is doing some great things in your life. I really enjoyed my visit here. I think I came over from a comment you made about Grace somewhere. I'm sorry I just followed a few links so I can't remember.

Anyways, God is teaching me a lot about Grace also, so came for a visit. Lovely to "meet" you.
